Harpers' Closing Opens Door for New Acts
by Jed Gottlieb
excerpt from Boston Herald
An odd assortment of acts called Allston rock club Harpers Ferry home.
One night the room hosted an underground hip-hop showcase, the next
featured Western Mass. metal acts, the next brought in a local tribute
band. For decades, Harpers’ bottom line seemed to be: If you’re good at
what you do -whatever the style, sound or genre - and you can drag in a
hundred people, you can play.
That legacy comes to an end Sunday when the Soul Rebels Brass Band
plays Harpers’ final show. The venue is expected to be reborn under new
ownership as the Brighton Music Hall early next year.

Iconic Allston Club Harpers Ferry to close
by Martin Cabellero
excerpt from Boston Herald
Harpers Ferry, a popular Allston nightspot for 40 years, is closing.
The club’s general manager, Andrew Wolan, announced yesterday
that Harpers Ferry’s lease had not been renewed by its landlord and the
club would shut down at the end of October.
“He didn’t want us there anymore,” Wolan said by phone Friday, referring to landlord John Corey, who also owns Blanchards Liquors, Harpers Ferry next-door neighbor on the corner of Brighton and Commonwealth avenues.
Wolan declined to elaborate on the specific reasons for the club losing its lease.
“We were working on something for the last few months to keep the
place open,” he said. “In the last few weeks we set a deadline and when
that passed, that was it. We already had shows booked through December,
but we decided Halloween would be the last day.”
Best known as a rock venue popular with Allston’s student population,
the Brighton Avenue club first opened in 1970. It has hosted
performances by local blues, hip-hop and funk bands, as well as major
acts including Aerosmith, Fall Out Boy and Bo Diddley .
Wolan said that he has no knowledge of Corey’s plans for the Harpers
Ferry site, but expressed his belief that the club’s closure would have a
negative impact on the local scene.
“It won’t help the music scene at all,” Wolan said. “Harpers was that
in-between (sized) venue for bands to further themselves. It’s one less
venue, one less place to play and obviously less exposure and
development for artists. Not everyone was a fan of Harpers Ferry, but
everyone had been there to see something. ”
As of yesterday, the club’s Web site was still boasting of shows well into December by acts as varied as new British hitmakers One Eskimo and rapper Cormega . But Wolan said the final curtain will go down at Harpers Ferry on Halloween night when New Orleans’ Soul Rebels Brass Band performs. What might be added to the schedule is a goodbye bash.
“We’re going to stick to our current calendar for the rest of the
month,” Wolan said. “But we have a few things possibly in the works for a
finale.”
